Martin Fitzgerald Lawrence is a comedian, actor and director. He’s achieved success as a stand-up comedian and is known for films like Bad Boys and Big Momma’s House. Lawrence was born to parents Chlora and John on April 16, 1965 in Frankfurt, Germany. He was named after Martin Luther King, Jr. and President John F. Kennedy. He has five siblings including Robert, Rae, and Ursula.
Lawrence spent his childhood between Queens, New York and Landover, Maryland. He attended Fairmont Heights High School followed by Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Maryland. He was encouraged by his teacher to take up comedy. Lawrence pursued boxing as a teenager and eventually became a Mid-Atlantic Golden Gloves contender. He gave up the sport after suffering a severe eye injury.
CAREER
Lawrence began his stand-up career performing at The Improv comedy club in New York City. He landed his first acting role on the situation comedy, What’s Happening Now!!, from 1987 to 1988. Other early appearances include Do the Right Thing (1989), House Party (1990) and the 1992 film Boomerang with Eddie Murphy. Lawrence rose to prominence after he was selected by entrepreneur, Russell Simmons, to host ‘Def Comedy Jam’ on HBO in 1992. He followed up with the hit sitcom, Martin, which ran on Fox from 1992 to 1997. He was honored with the NAACP Image Award for outstanding lead actor in a comedy series in 1995 and 1996.
Lawrence starred as “Detective Marcus Burnett” alongside Will Smith in the 1995 action-comedy, Bad Boys. The second installment of the film was released in 2003 and the third is slated for 2017. He starred in A Thin Line Between Love and Hate (1996) with Lynn Whitfield, Blue Streak (1999) with Luke Wilson, and Big Momma’s House (2000) with Nia Long.
Aside from acting and comedy, Lawrence has released two albums in the 1990s. His debut, Martin Lawrence Live Talkin’ Shit, was released in 1993 by East West Records. The album peaked at #76 on the Billboard 200 and featured the singles “Boxin” and “Black Kids/white Kids”. His second album, Funk It, was released in 1995 and peaked at #35 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.
