He has worked with recording artists like Mariah Carey, Jay Z, TLC, Migos and Aretha Franklin. He’s also known for the Lifetime reality series ‘The Rap Game’. Dupri started his music career at a young age. He experimented with the keyboard, drums, and dancing. At age 10 he performed as a dancer at one of Diana Ross’s concerts. His next project was the ‘New York Fresh Festival’ which he opened with Run-D.M.C., Whodini, and Grandmaster Flash. Dupri gained early success producing for the hip hop duo Kris Kross (Chris “Mac Daddy” Kelly, Chris “Daddy Mac” Smith). He produced the duo’s debut album Totally Krossed Out (1992). The album went 4x Platinum with songs like “Jump” and “Warm It Up”. Dupri founded his own record label ‘So So Def Recordings’ in 1993 in Atlanta, Georgia. The label is home to artists like Bow Wow, Miss Mulatto, J-Kwon, and the groups Jagged Edge and Xscape. Dupri served as a Producer on Mariah Carey’s 1995 single “Always Be My Baby” and on Lil Kim’s debut album Hard Core (1996). In 1993, Dupri agreed to a distribution deal between his So So Def label and Columbia Records. His debut studio album, Life in 1472, was released in July 1998. It peaked at #3 on the Billboard 200 and #1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. It included tracks like “Money Ain’t a Thang”, “Sweetheart” and “The Party Continues”. His second album, Instructions, was released in October 2001. It featured guest artists like Ludacris, Kurupt, Pharrell Williams, and Da Brat. His distribution partnership with Columbia ended in 2002. Dupri has since worked with Arista Records and Virgin Records. He won a Grammy Award for Best R&B song for Mariah Carey’s “We Belong Together”. The song spent 14 weeks at the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100. Dupri’s memoir ‘Young, Rich and Dangerous’ was published in October 2007. He has won multiple awards including the ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Music Songwriter of the Year, the ASCAP Golden Note Award, and the Billboard Otis Redding Excellence Award.
